Cyber Defense, Solar Power: A Life Built on Backups
How cybersecurity specialist Tifa Lynn stays connected through Florida’s storms with two Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus systems
A Curiosity That Became a Calling
Before hurricanes, blackouts, and the long search for reliable backup power, there was simply curiosity, a need to understand how things work beneath the surface. “I’ve always kind of had a natural curiosity about how things work,” Tifa says. Growing up, she noticed how everything around her was connecting. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, smart systems, and cybersecurity became the path that let her look “under the hood.”
It is a career shaped by high stakes. “You’re coming in and seeing people and businesses on some of their worst days,” she says. “It kind of shocks you into wanting to be prepared yourself.”
Preparation, for Tifa, is not theoretical. In her world, the smallest anomaly may signal a breach, a service disruption, or the beginning of something far more serious. Her work lives in the space where digital vulnerability meets human consequence.
“I always want to have internet,” she explains. “I always want to have power.”
In Florida, a place where thunderstorms roll in daily during summer and hurricanes carve through cities every year, those needs are constantly at risk.
The First Big Outage
Last year, when a major hurricane struck Florida, Tifa experienced a blackout that lasted several days.
She had a gasoline generator, but it came with its own chaos: noise, fumes, safety concerns, and the frantic hunt for gasoline when every gas station ran empty. “I drove around for miles,” she says. “Every gas station was out of gas because everyone was panicking.”
The generator worked “in a pinch,” but not for what she truly needed: stability. Continuity. A way to stay online in the middle of an ongoing test, scan, or urgent case.
At the time, she owned a small Jackery unit. “It saved me a little bit,” she says. “It was able to power my laptop for almost the entirety of several days.” But it wasn’t enough to run her full setup: PCs, server, peripherals, modem, and air conditioning.
What it did give her was clarity: “I needed more. I needed alternative options.”
That insight set everything in motion.
The Search for a System She Could Trust
As she researched solar generator systems, Tifa discovered Jackery again, this time the Explorer 5000 Plus.
“I read all the options,” she says. Other brands used older battery chemistries. Some were cheaper but far less reliable. “Something you don’t want to find out when you need power is that your battery doesn’t work,” she notes.
Jackery stood out for three reasons: consistent quality, reliability, and customer support.
“They were not terribly more expensive than other options,” she explains, “and Jackery just seemed like the most cost-effective option and the most reliable option. That’s what I personally need.”
She purchased two Explorer 5000 Plus units, building a system powerful enough to sustain work, comfort, and security during the longest outages.
When the Power Went Out Again
It didn’t take long for the investment to prove itself.
In Florida’s peak storm months, even a passing downpour can knock out the grid. “You lose power for hours,” Tifa says. “And it’s almost like we didn’t lose power at all because we’re able to run off the 5000 Plus.”
She keeps one unit on each side of the house so she can redirect power instantly. “It takes me like a minute,” she says. “Everything’s back on.”
Internet, computers, air conditioners, refrigerator: the essentials remain uninterrupted.
“Being able to have my room be almost like I’m having an uninterrupted backup power supply… It’s pretty awesome.”
And the outages that once caused anxiety now barely register.
“Now I don’t really care anymore because I know I’m going to be good,” she says.
Working Through the Storm
Cybersecurity is a field where downtime is not an option.
“I have to be online. I have to be available 24/7,” she explains. “Cyber criminals don’t have a specific time… they want to attack when you’re least expecting it.”
Her Jackery system keeps her modem, computers, and secure access channels running for hours, long enough that most outages end before her batteries do.
Living in Florida, she also relies on portable AC units. “The Jackery has been able to support that as well,” she says. “Living in Florida, it’s hot… That’s definitely a lifesaver.”
Power failure no longer interrupts her job, her comfort, or her safety.
“It’s definitely been a lifesaver,” she repeats.
Learning the Sun’s Rhythm
While Tifa and her housemate haven’t set up their full solar array yet, she has been experimenting with solar charging using panels from her smaller Jackery unit.
“It was neat seeing them get like 90% the entire time,” she says. It made her optimistic about eventually maxing out the 5000 Plus system with expansion batteries.
“Being less reliant and susceptible to outages is good enough for me,” she says. Savings would be a bonus, but resilience is the goal.
Preparedness as a Way of Life
Her work philosophy blends seamlessly with her approach to power.
“You never want to be caught not having a backup of something essential for you,” she says. The sentiment applies as much to data as it does to electricity.
She often thinks about ransomware cases: hospitals, schools, and city governments locked out of their systems with no backups. The devastation is both technical and human.
That is why redundancy is part of her identity: a small anomaly matters, a backup battery matters.
Preparedness is not paranoia: it’s responsibility.
Sharing the Knowledge
Tifa talks about Jackery often, especially with coworkers and Florida neighbors.
“Technology’s gotten better,” she tells them. “Panels are a lot better… batteries last longer.”
Some people hesitate, unsure about solar or battery degradation. She tries to help them understand the difference modern systems make. “It’s always great to have something in case something happens,” she says. “You never want to be caught with nothing.”
And for those in her field, where hours of downtime can determine the outcome of a security breach, she believes battery backup should be mandatory. “People like us understand backups,” she says. “It shouldn’t be a stretch to back up your electricity as well.”
What Power Really Means
When asked to summarize what Jackery means to her, Tifa doesn’t hesitate.
“I wouldn’t say three words,” she says. “I just say one: essential.”
Essential for work.
Essential for comfort.
Essential for the peace of mind that her home and career will not collapse the next time the grid flickers.
“Having a backup is essential,” she repeats. “Jackery is one of the best ones you can have.”
